We are 4 episodes in and the bandwagon is a big one. In the first week, we heard that Mayans was the most popular new show in the history of new shows on any planet in the solar system. Maybe some exaggeration there, but that’s the theme in this country right ??

Mayan Fever
There is no doubt, this show has started out with positive move. Being early into it, its clear that there are some common themes that are shared by both Sons of Anarchy and Mayans MC.

The Smart One.
It was apparent throughout Sons of Anarchy’s life span that Jax was a cerebral fellow. A poetic and mindful guy . Eventually, taking though thoughts and putting eloquently into a journal. Despite his explosive temper and tendency to , you know, kill people, he was smart. Fast forward to Mayans. Ez , right from the very beginning , was set as a smart guy. Smart in a different way. More of a “Big Bang Theory” smart. Wearing a Stanford sweatshirt in a flashback and clearly seems to be a photographic type memory similar to Dan Brown’s character Robert Langdon The kid could remember. He also seems to have an affinity for the written word.

OTV. (Over the Top Violence).
Ok, its a show about outlaw motorcycle clubs(gangs) and that by default needs to be gritty. Sons of Anarchy showed us stabbings and shootings as frequent as someone stubbing their toe. Mayans is no different. From the very first episode (SPOILER), a man is bound and his right arm slashed clean off. In a later episode, both adult and child are murdered as retaliation by what is staged as as horrific burning. While this murder was not played out on the screen, it was framed very well.

Childhood Loves.
One of the core stories around Sons was that of Jax and Tara. She came back to charming and quickly fell back in love with her prior love. Jax and Tara had a history. In Mayans, Ez and Emily have a clear history. One that is part of a flashback in the first episode and even involved a cameo from lovely Gemma. Years passed by and you know there is something there that will be evolving in the story as the episodes keep coming our way.
There are others , more obvious ones. Yeah there are cast ties to Sons. They all ride Harley Davidison motorcycles. Those are the obvious ones.
So far, its a dark, intriguing show with a lot of potential.
