Motorcycle Safety Matters; May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

We all know it.   We all know there is an inherent risk associated with that thing we love to do.   To ride. In the month of May, we take some time to focus on  safety and for good reason.

In March, the risk factors and percents were thrown out about motorcycle safety.

In the blink of an eye, a joy ride can turn into a life changing event or even a life ending event.  The numbers dont lie.

  • 43% of riders died in 2014 were alcohol related
  • 4586 motorcyclists were killed in 2014

There are other resources that show how your states trends look and how they look year over year.

The factors that do not seem to change are the following:

  1. Lack of protection
  2. Riding impaired
  3. Riding beyond your skill level (SPEED)

In the News

This is also the time of year where accidents and news coverage is everywhere.

Recently, in Utah, there was an article about motorcycle related fatalities.  In the month of April, there were 4 fatalities , where in the prior year through April , the total was 5.   Needless to say, the month of April was a rough month in Utah.   Known for open , scenic views, and long ideal roads and places called Zion and Nebo.

Regardless of whether there truly has been a dramatic spike in percent of fatalities or if its just a reflection of more bikes being out in the month of April this year, the fact that 4 individuals lost their lives in one month is worth being concerned about.   Four families, spouses, sisters, and brothers all lost someone riding.

We must ride with an increasing level caution.  Additionally, being aware that we might not be seen.  We can be invisible on the open roads we travel. Surrounded by distracted  and phone addicted drivers who have a hard enough time keeping their vehicle between the lines.

We have to ride smart.  Running wide open like we are on a closed stretch of highway makes no sense.   The rush may be amazing, but the risk to you and those around you is not worth it.

Ride smart, ride safe, and keep both eyes on the road.  And always, ride another day.
