Three hidden motorcycle hazards.

Everyone knows that riding a motorcycle is Danger comes by default.  The stats across the United States might make you think just jumping on a motorcycle might make you fall over after a month or two.   Well, yes, it can be dangerous.   However there may be some hidden motorcycle hazards coming from that  moto hobby that you’re not thinking about.

The Hidden Motorcycle Hazards

  1. Carb Cleaner.   This might be some of the most addictive stuff we have.   LOVE THE CARBSRESPECT THE CARBS .   If you’re going to tackle some of your bikes routine maintenance, the one thing you’ll likely be taking on is CLEANING THE CARBS.   You’ll find yourself stocking up on spray cans of the stuff.  A quick study of the Safety Data Sheet for a common brand (Gum Out) reveals that this stuff can cause issues such as irritation of the respiratory tract,  impaired nervous system , nausea, dizziness,  even death if careless and inhaled.   While this stuff can make quick work of the dirtiest carb (and engine) parts, its not something to throw complete disregard to caution. Is this the most dangerous of the motorcycle hazards?
  2. Brake Fluid.  Motorcycles can be leaky, and finicky beasts.  Not having brake fluid in your system can be a danger for sure . However ,one fluid that seems to show up time to time as a a pain in the ass is brake fluid.   Drip some on your tank and miss cleaning it off and you’ll appreciate the destructive value of this stuff.   Looking at our trusty MSDS, you’ll see that this slippery stuff comes with hazards like basic skin irritation and possibly liver damage and damage to reproductive systems (male and female)  WHAT!??
  3. Engine Oil.  Lets clarify this.  NOT NEW OIL, BUT USED OIL.     New oil is about as safe as rubbing butter on your belly.   Maybe clog some pores and have some regrets.   Used oil on the other end of the spectrum is loaded with nasty chemicals , additives, and bits from burnt fuel.   Gasoline has made your oil a nasty stew of carcinogens.   Minimize your contact with this stuff. It does have science to make you think.. Maybe invest in some gloves for this one task.  If you do get some on you, don’t rub it in like its made by DOVE as a new line of face lotion.

Digging into your motorcycle is rewarding and part of what makes the hobby so appealing to midlfers.   Taking a few steps to protect yourself from a few bad chemicals isn’t a bad thing. Danger isn’t always the truck turning left in front of you or the dog off a leash chasing you down the road.

Keep riding, wrenching, and having fun. Be aware of the hidden motorcycle hazards.

Stay safe.
