Three reasons why electric motorcycles will never dominate the streets.

ITS ELECTRIC

There is an evolution taking place.   Electric powered vehicles , including motorcycles and their technology are continuing to improve .  There any many one off companies producing electric motorcycles now and even Harley Davidson has stepped up its efforts to roll out production ECycles.  Their step forward involves a new partnership with Alta Motors .  The big question is this.   Will the hum of ecycles take over the street?
Not for a while….

  1. The sexy sounds. The current motorcycle culture involves sensory inputs from many points. The wind, the road, and more importantly the roar of the engine with every twist of the throttle.   These are toys for many (most) people.  They take them out as a point of recreation.   There are hundreds of YouTube videos dedicated to the sexy sounds side of motorcycles.   The scream of a Ducati V4 and the rumble of a Harley Dyna are iconic turn on’s. We want that feeling.
  2. The range..Batteries have a limited range currently .   Being tethered in essence.   While this technology is improving, the current bike culture revolves around slogans like “Freedom Machine”.   Getting away and experiencing life, just don’t go beyond 112 miles..   yeah right.  Zero boasts a city range of over 200 miles.   Not too shabby.   Highway miles are a bit different.  Around 112 according to Zero’s website.
  3. The size…So far, electric motorcycles have a profile similar to that of a 650 dual purpose or even something smaller.

There is no denying that there will be a time when every vehicle, not just motorcycles runs on something other that gas or diesel.   Progress is change and that’s something that always causes an automatic “over my dead body” response.   It will happen , just not this year or next.   As developers continue to evolve their machines , they will fine tune things like utility, range, and raw power.   We may find that being able to ride all day and go zero to 60 in 3 seconds counters the effects of that rumble and scream.   That sweet symphony .   It will always have a place in our hearts though, regardless of the progress.
