Squinting in the Summer Sun

It’s bright out there.  Check your eye awareness before you spend another long wonderful ride roaring toward that sun.  Chasing a sunset.   The favorite wind down for many a rider.   The problem is, that sun is kicking your eye’s butt.   (Let that absurd statement sink in)

The summer is at its peak and if you’re like me, you cant ride enough.   To work, after work, to coffee (20 miles away, thank you BLIP), to any unknown destination you can reach just because you want to get away.   If you’re like me,  there is a noticeable impact the sun is having after you ride.   Dry and strained eyes.   That’s just the tip of the iceberg.   The sun may even cause you temporary “SNOW BLINDNESS”.   It may be summer, but this condition is no joke.   Your cornea is inflamed!  Your vision is temporarily  messed up for as many as 2-3 days!

If you’re at least smart enough to bust out the shades or tinted shield, be aware that the big elephant in the room (bright sunny elephant) is UV .   Check the UV protection on your protection.  Just like that sun screen you’re not wearing, protection from the sun’s impact on your eyes will be something you are thankful for years down the road.

SUN DAMAGE

The cumulative effect of all that damage, combined with the fact that you’re just getting old, will cause you to have a higher risk for

  • Cataracts
  • Macular Degeneration

You want to hang on to those baby blues don’t you?

So, as much as you like chasing the summer sunset, be sure you are aware how much you’ve been staring at that hot ball of gas and what kind of protection you have.  Keep riding!
